facing the Colonnade du Louvre

The Hotel de la Place du Louvre is situated in a calm street, just a few steps from not only the Louvre, the Seine and the Point des Arts, but also the Georges Pompidou Centre and the Ile de la Cité. In this characteristic old Paris building, stonewalls and modern decor work wonderfully together. Each room is named after a famous artist, and breakfast is served in the “Cave des Mousquetaires” (Musketeers), a vaulted cave which was once connected to the Louvre. The windows look onto the famous Colonnade du Louvre.

The Colonnade, built between 1667 and 1672, is one of the many gems of the palace - the biggest in all of Europe  that took almost a thousand years to build and cannot be separated from the history of Paris or even that of France.
Under the reign of Philippe Auguste (1180-1223), Paris acquired a new fortified wall - the start of the Louvre - to protect the city from the danger of an Anglo-Norman invasion. After Louis XII, the Renaissance chateau of Francois 1st was completed by Henri II and his sons.
In 1564, Queen Catherine de Médicis, the widow of Henri II, commissioned Philibert Delorme to build the Tuileries Palace. Subsequent kings had the two buildings connected by a passage, now known as the Grande Galerie.
Under the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, the building of the Louvre progressed a great deal; they finished the construction of the Cour Carrée and also built the Galerie Apollon and the Colonnade.
In 1678, Louis XIV moved the royal residence from the Louvre to the Chateau de
Versailles. And in 1793, the palace officially became a museum. Today, it is considered to have one of the richest art collections in the world; the entrance to the galleries is through the famous glass pyramid built in 1989 by Leoh Ming Pei, in the middle of the Napoleon Courtyard.
The harmony between the centuries-old architecture of the Palace and this modern addition is surprising and elicits admiration.
